've been talking with tom porcelli, chief mist at rbc cap >> tom: despite a strong end to the year, ford stock fell more than 4.5% today. the concern is, ford doesn't think this year will be much better than last year. the auto maker earned 31 cents a share, up from a year ago and six cents better than forecasts. revenues jumped 5.5% to $36.5 billion while global sales grew by 7%. much of that strength came from the north american market. but, as ruben ramirez reports, 2013 may bring with it some bumps in the road. >> reporter: 2013 may well turn out to be a year that ford gets stuck in neutral. while sales in north america are revving up, europe and the company's continuing investments in asia could pull it back to neutral. >> europe is just having all sorts of structural problems, and i don't see that turning around anytime soon. we've seen some wobbles in south america and in asia, but all around the globe everyone looks the u.s. as the real bright spot in terms of automotive sales. >> reporter: here in the u.s., ford says total auto sales could hit 16 million. that would be up more t

, is feeling the pinch. executives at ford saw profits plunge in 2012. sales in europe were weak due to the region's debt crisis. ford executives say the firm's net income xlum meted more than 70% year on year to $5.7 billion. they sold nearly 6 million cars worldwide last year, down half a percent from 2011. sales in north america were upbeat, but european sales tumbled over 15%. u.s. automakers including ford are raising their voices against japan's currency policy. they say the weakened yen hurts their earnings and gives japanese rivals an unfair advantage. >>> people in the u.s. are more pessimistic about their financial situation. consumer confidence plunged in january to the lowest level in over a year. researchers at analytics firm the conference board say the index dropped to 58.6. that's down 8.1 point from december and is the lowest level since november 2011. they say the increase in the payroll tax has dampened consumer sentiment. u.s. share prices are rising as investors expect an economic recovery. but the focus now is what impact the increased pessimism will have on per

. the new year brought new momentum to automakers. ford, gm and chrysler all sold more cars and trucks. chrysler had its best january in 5 years, with a 16% jump. ford's sales rose 22% from last year, its best january since '06, and gm's sales topped 16%. its estmated that total auto sales hit 15.5 million last month. foreign brands helped that number. sales at toyota jumped a whopping 27% in january. and volkswagen celebrated its best january since 1974 - a 6.7% increase. demand for the accord helped the numbers at honda. demand for the model pushed sales up 12.7% consumer reports is out with its list of best car brands. toyota, ford, honda and chevrolet rank as the top brands with best consumer perception. motorists judged the automakers based on safety, value, performance, design, technology and environmental friendliness. it was a major plus for toyota to top the list, considering its recall issues past and present. fourth-quarter earnings wrapped up with a mixed bag of results for mattel, exxon, and tyson. mattel's profits dropped 17%, hit by a litigation charge earlier in the ye

not become president, i hope not because i was working with them at the time. i admired gerald ford, whom i did not know well but then some time with -- spent some time with. i always thought he was the most emotionally healthy of all the people i have known who were president. not that the others were basketcase is, but he became president -- most people become president, and bill clinton was not the exception, sometime around the fourth grade. they get that bug -- the only known cure for the presidential virus is embalming fluid. gerald ford wanted to be speaker of the house when he was republican leader of the house -- they were in the minority. along the way he became president. he knew who he was. he was comfortable with who he was. i always wish i had known harry truman, because i felt that he liked being harry truman. he never thought about being anybody else but harry truman. i felt that way about gerald ford. >> 30 years ago -- here you are, appearing on this network on a call in show. let's watch. >> it is baloney on both sides -- ronald reagan is a phony on defense. ronald reagan

like ford fusion. turbo charge engines popular with buyers seeking better mileage. auto marks ramping up production of these engines. they are using it as a way to increase fuel economy. they have to increase the number of vehicles they are soelg that have better fuel economy. they are pushing these engines and consumers are buying into it. nobody more so than ford. if you go to ford and ask for an ecoboost engine, they will be happy to sell you one. 90% of ford models for sale this year will come with the offer of an ecoboost engine, about another $795 for that engine. take a look at shares of ford. keep this in mind. ford when we can'ted them about this consumer reports study they say, listen, these engines are delivering mpg set out there in testing by the epa. they say that the customer feedback they are getting from people who have these engines, sue, across the board they have never seen better feedback. they dispute these findings. by the way, other automakers we contacted dispute these findings there consumer reports. this is worth watching. turbo charge engines are here to ci

. it was wonderful. it was a book called "basic physics" by ken ford. and ken ford became my mentor and another big influence on me. and ken ford's book, awesome. he told it like it is. ken ford is a giant himself. he doesn't have a nobel prize but his friends do. he's one of those type guys. he was the exec officer of the american institute of physics. i'm proud to say now, i'm very proud of him to have him for a personal friend. so he was a great influence on me. and now i find myself, my greatest satisfaction is to realize that i myself am an influence for other people. i'm sort of a kenny isaacs or a burl grey or a ken ford to many sten. and this many is with a capital m, thanks to the efforts of my friend marshall alenstein who has put together these videotapes and these dvds that spread my lectures from thelassroom into the classrooms of my ople. and so, it's wonderful beg that role model for other teachers and students. and whatever can do to be burl grey to other people, to let them see that perhaps a very good foundation for, hey, what's going on in the world, certainly, is science. so let

crews are busy in two locations right now. one occurred on riffle ford road in darnestown. still a little bit dark out there. another rescue is happening on brighton dam road. you are warned to never go through standing water. that is what is so difficult. it is dark out. maybe you don't seen see it until you are right up on it. but, as we say, turn around, don't drown. just remember, parts of the area picked up about 2 1/2 inches of rain in a very short period of time last night. we still have issues. we no longer have any flash flood warnings. all of the water has to get down into the creek and rivers because we're having problems flowing the banks here. the other big story today, winds have picked up overnight. we've already seen winds gusting to about 45. we have a wind advisory and winds are going to within us all day today. this is a never-ending weather story this week. a pretty crazy week of weather. temperatures have been falling now. 50 at reagan national. dulles, over 2-inch of his of rain -- over 2 inches of rain in a short period of time yesterday. winds gusts alrea

. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, coral, ford posted a 54% rise in profit in the final three months of 2012 so that tops expectations. you look at sales especially in north america they jumped but europe continues to be a big problem for the company, in fact ford's operations there are actually posted a loss which when you think about it not so surprising when you consider the region, it's been dealing with the debt crisis for years now. the company has announced plant closings and job cuts to stem the bleeding in europe, which has hit the other major automakers as well, but we talk about this a lot when we talk about earnings, what everybody sort of looks at is what is going to happen going forward and because it's more important than what just happened and the outlook for ford at this point is very good even with issues in europe hanging over their heads. fort is expecting north american profits to continue to be strong especially with the new model of the f-150 coming out, i'd say in about 2015 we're hearing, shares though of ford are down about 1.5% in the premarket, caro
